“The isolation has given me time to reflect and create something so epic yet so personal, with just my tight, close-knit family of collaborators who I love,” Smalls says. But when live drag shows ceased to exist, Smalls couldn’t stand being locked up at home with no creative outlet. In 2018, Smalls began filming vérité-style clips for a YouTube docuseries titled Smalls World. The Smalls World Show’s origins date back before the pandemic. The Smalls World Show, she says, is her opportunity to give fans “a deeper view of my story told through me instead of the 10 minutes that you saw in an episode one day when you were flipping through channels.” In the reality TV machine, personal stories and moments get watered down into a highly edited, expertly crafted narrative that often doesn’t reflect the story the person in question was actually trying to tell. Given that up until now she’s always been “a part of someone else’s production,” that doesn’t surprise her. “I think that people have a pretty guided idea of what they think Naomi is, and I’ve never really corrected them on that because I haven't really felt like I had the platform to really speak my mind or really tell my story,” Smalls tells Forbes of the misconceptions around her persona. The Smalls World Show, premiering today via Voss Events, is a unique product of Smalls’ imagination that brings together intimate lip sync numbers and candid documentary segments that gives a never-before-seen look into the life of the traditionally subdued queen. Now, after touring the world and building a name for herself as a solo artist, Naomi Smalls is ready for a show of her own.
